Privacy Statement
Accelerate Virginia - Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech has created this privacy statement in order to demonstrate our firm commitment to privacy. The following discloses the information gathering and dissemination practices for this web site.

Information Automatically Logged
This site uses your IP address to help diagnose problems with our server and to administer our site.
This data may be used to preserve the integrity of our computing resources.

Personal Information
Automatically collected or required personal information:

  • IP address
  • City
  • State
  • Zip code
  • Latitude
  • Longitude
  • Download speed
  • Upload speed
  • Testing server used to run speed test
  • Google Maps zoom level when marker was placed

Optional personal information:

  • Location name (could be an address or simply a place name identifier)
  • Internet service provider
  • Cost of Internet service and whether it is bundled
  • Internet connection type (DSL, Cable, etc.)
  • Subjective rating of connection
  • Number of alternative service provider options available
  • Whether or not faster Internet connection options are available

The required and automatically collected fields are used to create a map marker (using lat/lng) and associate it with an Internet speed test (using upload/download). The IP address and testing server IP are recorded to enable us to troubleshoot problems with our testing servers and compare reported service provider to a list of known IP blocks. City state and zip code are used for grouping and sorting, and are obtained from the Google Maps geocoder retroactively from latitude and longitude. Zoom level is used to allow us to assign a confidence level to the positional accuracy of a marker. All the optional fields are used to allow us to better understand the costs, satisfaction levels, and other factors associated with Internet service provision. We can, for example, use these fields in analysis to identify whether there is a spatial pattern in "dollars per megabit" or to determine if certain types of connections on the whole, across all providers, typically have higher satisfaction levels. We can only answer such research questions when optional fields are populated.

We do not share any personal information with any third parties nor do we use any personal information for any purposes beyond those stated here.
